Ambition

Ambition is idolised. It is a driving force that a lot of us admire.

Although everyone’s ambitions are different, we must not ignore the habits that protect our mental health when chasing these goals. Here are 3 things to keep in mind whilst chasing your goals in order to help you flourish.

1. Strive for growth

Adopting the growth mindset means not letting ambition rule your life but instead appreciating and acknowledging the small improvements you make.

  • Do not ignore your small achievements by dismissing them because it is not yet the end goal
  • Do not limit your belief that the process towards the goal is not meaningful
  • Do not dismiss how fulfilling the journey is and the gratification you should give yourself along it

2. Prioritise meaningful relationships

Be careful not to let ambition crowd important areas of your life.

Fulfilling aspects of life such as meaningful relationships and autonomy play a role in protecting our mental health.

  • Do not let work seep into your time with family
  • Do not compromise important moments for last-minute meetings
  • Do not forget to recognise and verbally validate the people who are important to you
  • Do not tell people you are too busy for things that are meaningful to them

3. Value time

When we attach a cost to a hobby, we tend to find that hobby less enjoyable and over-time it becomes a chore. In cases where we value time spent making money over a hobby, we limit ourselves from fulfilling our interests and granting ourselves me-time.

  • Do not only engage in activities for a monetary outcome
  • Do not ignore how your mind and body feel when you are doing something you enjoy
  • Do not block out your needs and interests due to a want of “being productive”

As important as it is to pursue your passions, achieve your goals, and gain the recognition you deserve – none of these things will ever even come close to the importance of your mental health and happiness.

Don’t invest all your time, energy, and resources in building a career and neglect to invest in your most important asset… you.
