Uplifting, empowering affirmations

Whether it takes place over a prolonged period of time or just before a big event, anxiety, can throw us off course, creeping into the rest of our lives and preventing us from going about our daily routine as normal.

Our minds might begin to race, we may have trouble focusing, and there are a whole host of physical symptoms that can accompany it, too. Of course, in some cases, we may need to seek out professional help via a GP or mental health professional – but there are certain things that we can do ourselves to help manage our anxiety.

When we repeat mantras and affirmations to ourselves, we’re vocalising our intentions. These short, simple phrases can hold a lot of power over our mindset, grounding us in the moment and helping us focus on the task at hand. Next time you feel overpowered by anxiety, stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and repeat one of these mantras firmly to yourself. You may be surprised at the effect such simple, reassuring words can have.

  1. I am capable of overcoming the challenges that come my way
When we’re worried about something, the challenge to overcome it can seem ten times harder. Remind yourself of your ability to weather this storm, just like you’ve done before, and as you will do again in the future.
  2. This will pass
When we’re in the midst of panic, it can feel like the world is crashing down upon us. Know that anxiety and panic attacks happen when our body goes into flight or fight mode, and those feelings, for a lot of us, with some reassuring actions will subside within a few minutes.
  3. I am right here, right now
An anxious mind can really take you for a ride sometimes. You may find yourself so caught up in a spiral of thoughts that you lose touch with the task at hand, or the reality around you.
  4. I am loved
Picture the people in your life who love and care about you, reassure yourself with their presence, and remember to reach out.
  5. I am in control
Remind yourself of the control you really do have over the small things – take some deep breaths, relax your muscles, and bring yourself back to the present.
  6. I am safe
The flight or fight response that triggers anxiety is the same one that is supposed to keep us safe in the face of danger – it’s just that it’s working in overdrive. Reassure yourself that, in this moment, you are safe from harm.
  7. I believe in my talents
Anxiety can undercut our sense of confidence and self-belief. Take stock of the things that you are good at, refuse to listen to your inner-critic, and put self-belief front and centre.

With a new day comes new opportunities. Tomorrow is definitely a chance to start again with a fresh mind.
